Growing Tulips in Tropical – Indonesia Lowland part I

Growing Tulips in Tropical – Indonesia Lowland part I

This time I wrote my experience in English so everyone from everywhere can read my experience here from my blog. Well this time I will explain about how to grow tulips in my area Tangerang – Indonesia which is the weather tend to hot and humid, it’s approximately 30-33 celcius. It’s enough to make you get sweatttt :P

I received the Tulip bulb from a friend of mine on March 2014, the variety is triumph and the colours are mixed. The bulbs that I have are already precooled and it takes to bloom in 4-5 weeks (@ the box info).
Many info that I got that Tulips can not grow in lowland with hot temperature/ local temperature. So I have an idea to grow them in a “condition”
“CONDITION” which is mean I will grow indoor and with the helps of aircon    and I thanks also to my friend that lives and grow tulips too but in Indonesian highland area, for his tutor and information about  growing tulips ( even we have different temperature here) hihihi.

I have planted them in my office, just for a little information that my office is a kind of a workshop/ plant yard which has several rooms made from a metal container, to stored mechanic, electrical and other construction stuffs storing. Me I worked in the office which is made by a real wall.  Oke let’s to the point:

The Tulips that I plant indoor  (in my office), I set the temperature in 17 celcius using “ready to use” soil (it’s consists of compost, peat moss, other biological fertilizer and good bacteria). The Tulips they are growing  faster than what I thought . They are blooming in 2 weeks… well what a surprise!! :D #voilaaaa Happy

I didn't plant the bulb very deep, because they are already have shoot. Below are the progress of my tulips that start from 1st day of planting until they are blooming.

they shown the shoots

original Tulip bulbs that I received for the first time from Holland :)

some of tulip bulbs grow with varies height

mijn poes en tulp :D

Tulips 12 days old :D nearly full bloom, the other are slowerrrr :(

I found  this red emperor tulip.. it's a tiny tulips

Full bloom!!! I put it on my desk together with the artificial tulip (yellow ones) :D

mooi vivid red

1 bulb 2 flowers.. what a lucky one that I have..  :D

Not all of the Tulips I planted in the office, but I also store them in other container room with the aircon also. The aircon always ON only in workhours 8 to 5 weekdays. So the Tulips have no cool time during the nights and weekend. Ohh maannn that is the biggest challenge I think.

I have also “failed to bloom” tulip bulbs :(  Because they took by my friend outside and live in hot local temperature, but the bulbs are good, no moldy. Until now, I still keep them in pot I will wait them until they get withered , together with the finished flowering bulb. ( I still investigate the cause of why they don't want to grow)

The most important things you have to notice when you grow tulips in tropical area are:
  1. first, checked the condition of the bulbs, make sure the bulbs are healthy and they don't show any of mold spot, if it's happen. get ready to seek the anti fungus remedy for flower or plants.
  2. make sure that the ideal temperature between 15-18 celcius, Tulips really need cool temp. they do not tolerate with heat and humid. (believe me)
  3. don't over water them, I use to watering them once in 3 days or if it's need.  Tulips don't like too much water, not good for the bulbs, it will cause them rot.
  4. and last not least also make sure that the soil not bad... Tulips also can not be grow if the soil is muddy. better you go to the plant store and buy the "ready to use soil"
Finished flowering, cut the flower stalk and let them dry

Now after they already flowering, this is not means that they just go died and nothing anymore. but after the flowering time is over, they are all turns to be withering. I cut the flower stalk, and let the leaves turn yellow like straws, that way they will save energy for the next flowering season and to have the offset ( you know the bulb can do multiply which is they produce "kids") I will wait aproximately for 6 weeks to dig up the soil and find out. Hopefully I have luckiness always and could harvest the bulbs also have real Tulip flowers again for the next :)

I hope I will write my experience about next step again, thank you for read my little note. have a good day!!

Kiss & hug,
Wita
